This may not be the most appropriate place, but I have a question....

Ok, if a single cell is placed into a culture containing nutrient agar, and the number of cells doulbes every 20 hours and the culture tube is completely filled in 50 days, how long will it take for the culture tube to to only 1/4 full of cells? (in hours)  Yes, this is a homework question.  I am not asking for the answer, just how to figure out the answer.  Thanks to anyone who helps.

Hi Yoneyama

Hi Yoneyama

Imagine your cultue is synchronous and all cells divide at the same time.
Now, The entire tube is filled with cells in 50days. So just 1 division cycle before cells will be 1/2 filling the vessel and 2 divisions before it will be 1/4th of the entire culture dish.
So your answer in hour  becomes 50x24hr - 20+20=1160hrs.
