Single Phase Gene Extraction

A paper in Biotechniques last year described a new approach for single phase gene extraction (SPGE). In short, this technology utilizes a very fine glass needle coated with oligo-dT to collect enough mRNA to perform gene expression experiments. All you do is prickle the tissue of interest with this needle and then break the tip of the needle into your PCR assay (or real time PCR). Done. No need to collect the tissue, extract the nucleic acids, etc. The article can be accessed here. Not only do you save time but since the needle is very fine (0.5 um) you can collect very specific spatial samples from complex tissues.
