West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory

CPA Accredited Laboratory

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory (WMRGL) for an additional Programme Manager to join the Technical Programme Senior Management team. Along with the two Heads of Programme and Programme Manager, this developing role will involve managing many aspects of the Technical Programme, including shared responsibility for its facilities, operations and team of almost 100 Technical staff; thereby acting as an interface between the Technical Programme and the laboratory’s senior management team.

The successful candidate must demonstrate evidence of working with a focus on excellence and continuous service improvement. The purpose of the role is to develop the technical service in order to deliver the continuing growth required to meet national agendas.

The WMRGL is the largest of the regional laboratories, delivering comprehensive genetic testing to 5.7 million people within the Midlands, approximately one tenth of the UK population. In addition we also provide tests for NHS and private hospitals both nationally and internationally, for university projects, and for industry. WMRGL currently performs in excess of 50,000 tests per annum employing over 200 scientific, technical and support staff in service delivery and research. The laboratory is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to ISO15189:2012 and is part of one of the genomic medicine centres in the Genomics England 100,000 genome project.

Over the last 4 years WMRGL has significantly expanded its research portfolio, securing over £4 million of R&D funding for projects covering a diverse spectrum of genetic disorders including cancer, developmental delay, and prenatal testing for genetic abnormalities. The laboratory was selected as one of three Technology Hubs for the Cancer Research UK Stratified Medicine Programme. WMRGL also hosts the Central England Haemato-oncology Research Biobank (CEHRB). We work closely with our Clinical Genetics Service, with the National Genetics and Genomics Education Centre; with the University of Birmingham, in particular, the  Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics, and the School of Cancer Sciences; and with diagnostic and pharmaceutical industries.

The post holder must be a highly motivated graduate in biological sciences or equivalent technical qualification, with several years of practical laboratory experience. Essential requirements for this post include significant experience of laboratory management, experience of line management of staff and a good understanding of laboratory quality systems, in particular UKAS/CPA. Experience within diagnostic genetics will be an advantage; however a sound knowledge of genetics is essential. We are looking for individuals committed to a technical career in laboratory genetics, with extensive experience of managing a technical team in a diagnostic laboratory setting.
