New Movement to create New Metrics in determining scientific career advance

Did you know about the new movement in life science called DORA (the San Francisco Declaration on Research Advancement) initiated by ASCB together with a group of editors and publishers of scholarly journals to improve the way scientific research is evaluated and create new metrics for determining career advancement?

Dr. Stefano Bertuzzi at the Association of American Publishers Meeting in January, 2014 spoke on the importance of Measuring Success in Research using New Metrics and what matters is WHAT not WHERE:  DORA seeks to look beyond Impact Factor (we need to be looking at more than whether someone has been published in journals with the highest impact factor) at such contributions as:

*Other scholarly works
*Citations
*Grants
*Educational Pedigree
*Professional Affiliations
*Editorships, funding panels, etc.
*Awards and Honors
*Institutional Service
*Internal and External Peer Review
*Social and online News Media such as blogs and contributions to discussion boards

You can sign the DORA petition on this link

Scientific insurgents say ‘Journal Impact Factors’ distort science and the misuse of the journal impact factor is highly destructive, inviting a gaming of the metric.
