PhD Scholarship in Bioorganic Chemistry

A 3-year PhD scholarship in organic and bioorganic chemistry under the supervision of Associate Professor Christian A. Olsen is available from November 1st, 2010 at DTU Chemistry.

Project description

The scholarship will play an integral part of the project: Design, Synthesis, Biological, and Structural Characterization of Novel Biomimetic Oligomers, financed by the Danish Council for Independent Research Natural Sciences. The PhD project will be focused on the development of synthetic methods for preparation of novel peptoid-containing oligomers and evaluation of their propensity to develop secondary folding. Three-dimensional structure elucidation will be performed by solving solution (NMR) as well as solid-state (X-ray) structures. Ultimately, compounds will be designed with the purpose of disrupting protein–protein interactions in interesting biological pathways related to cancer and/or selectively targeting microbial membranes.

Qualifications
The successful candidates should have a master’s degree in chemistry, pharmacy or engineering with experience in organic synthesis and spectroscopy, preferably at the Master Thesis level. The education should ideally include organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, spectroscopy, and physical chemistry.

Approval and Enrollment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD students at DTU.

Candidates may apply prior to obtaining their master’s degree, but cannot start the PhD studies before the master’s degree has been received.

Further information
Further questions about the projects should be directed to Christian A. Olsen, phone: (+45) 4525 2105.
