Your role will focus on DNA sequencing and associated methods. You will be involved in the development and implementation of a variety of cutting-edge techniques, including the establishment of a new ancient DNA extraction facility and a next-generation sequencing pipeline.
You will join a team of specialists in a range of skills, which forms part of Kew’s Department of Comparative Plant and Fungal Biology in the Science Directorate. The Analytical Methods section provides laboratory services for all other Kew Science Departments. It develops and implements technologies including molecular biology, microscopy, seed biology and biochemistry. You will report to the Molecular Laboratory Manager, and your tasks will include operation and maintenance of specialist equipment, training staff, students and visitors in specialist techniques, assisting in research projects, and applying appropriate health and safety procedures.
You will have a BSc degree-level or equivalent in an appropriate subject and knowledge of current research in plant and/or fungal molecular systematics. You will have skills in relevant laboratory techniques including DNA extraction, PCR, DNA sequencing and relevant computer programmes. Experience with next-generation sequencing techniques are highly desirable. You will possess training skills and experience of writing and presenting scientific data and will be a team player who can manage conflicting priorities and work on your own initiative.
