We are looking to recruit a Bioinformatician/Software Engineer to join the Functional Genomics Group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
The post-holder will work on SYBARIS (http://www.sybaris-fp7.eu), a multi-institution EU funded project, aimed at identifying biomarkers of anti-microbial drug resistance via a systems biology analysis of fungal pathogen interactions with the human immune system.
Within this project the successful candidate will work in a team on the research and development of data management, acquisition and processing pipelines for multi-omics datasets including next-generation sequencing genomics, proteomics as well as other data types. The Bioinformatician/Software Engineer will play a key role in the development of algorithms and the construction of a public knowledge base of biomarkers and models of drug resistance and sensitivity to fungal disease, working with all partners in the international consortium. The consortium consists of 7 wet lab and computational partners and EBI where the project is coordinated and where data analysis and integration will be performed.
The successful candidate will report to the project coordinator and will join a team of around 40 programmers and bioinformaticians within the wider Functional Genomics Team.
The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should hold a degree in Computer Science, Biology, Bioinformatics, Mathematics or a related field. Familiarity with diverse functional genomics data types, especially microarrays and short-read sequencing data is essential.
The ideal candidate will be an expert in Java in the context of web development and interacting with relational databases. It is an advantage if applicants have a background in the areas of statistical analysis, software engineering and/or bioinformatics data analysis. Experience with bioinformatics tools such as R/Bioconductor and/or MATLAB is a strong advantage, & experience in algorithm development, work with functional genomics data, especially next-generation sequencing data sets, and large data processing pipelines is valuable. Prior experience in large-scale bioinformatics data integration projects is plus, as is a strong background in software engineering.
We are looking for a motivated individual with a strong interest in science, with the ability to work in a team with software engineers, bioinformaticians and biologists. (S)he will be able to communicate effectively with wet-lab and computational partners, demonstrating initiative and creativity in problem-solving.
