Description:
Scope of Position:
Provides controls design solutions for novel future processing equipment, specifically fiber making and cable process equipment, in the optical waveguide and cabling manufacturing processes. These controls solutions will enable manufacturing systems to deliver and transform raw materials to product, convey ware between discrete processing steps, and/or measure and characterize ware created and/or processed by these novel manufacturing methods.

Day to Day Responsibilities:
• Integrate field devices for flow control, material handling and metering, motion control, temperature control, and associated safety systems into an overall control system package enabling a fully-functional equipment platform.
• Work closely with IT & process engineers to define analog & digital channel requirements, control sequence logic (both time-based and event-based), fail-safe states, and process /equipment recovery sequences.
• Select and specify field devices to accomplish desired process / equipment functions that are compatible / compliant with site standards.
• Work closely with engineering project team and eventual production operation receivers to determine design requirements and constraints.
• Drive to clarify design requirements when they are ambiguous or unknown.
• Accurately estimate timeframe to complete project work once scope of work is adequately defined and then complete work to agreed-to timeline.
• Lead or participate in engineering project teams that are responsible to deliver robust, cost effective automation and machine control systems to Corning’s manufacturing plants and processes.
• Lead or work within project teams to solve difficult automation problems, resolve project related issues, and develop fundamental understanding of technical / process requirements critical to system success.
• Drive the development of fundamental understanding of critical process and technical requirements, identify areas of technical risk in assigned projects, conduct prototype / feasibility testing to verify concept, and define and document system design specifications.
• Participate in the development of control architectures, control system standards, control system functional specification, and system integration requirements that will satisfy process and manufacturing requirements.
• Design, and / or direct resources, to develop fully integrated machine tools / motion control systems, robot cells, measurement systems, and safety systems.
• Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to successfully deliver fully integrated process equipment systems to Corning’s plants on-time, on-budget, and that satisfy performance measures.
• Actively lead or participate in all phases of the project including design, fabrication, off-line integration and testing, installation, production start-up support, training of plant personnel, and technology transfer.
• Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis. Ensure results meet the customer’s requirements as well as applicable national and international equipment design standards.
• Individual must be capable of executing project assignments in a team based environment and with minimal supervision.

Travel Requirements: 20-25% in North America. Limited international travel may be required.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 8am - 5pm

Required Education:
• B.S. in Engineering (Electrical Strongly Preferred) or Computer Science

Required Years and Area of Experience: 3+ years equipment/controls experience

Required Skills:
• Experience integrating field devices for flow control, material handling and metering, motion control, temperature control, and associated safety systems into an overall controls package enabling a fully-functional equipment platform.
• Experience with PID control loop tuning and techniques.
• Experience working with vision systems and digital image processing.
• Experience working closely with IT & process engineers to define analog & digital channel requirements, control sequence logic (both time-based and event-based), fail-safe states and process / equipment recovery sequences.
• Experience selecting and specifying field devices to accomplish desired process /equipment functions, and compatible / compliant with site standards.
• Experience with graphical user interface and human machine interface.
• Experience working closely with engineering project team and eventual production operation receivers to determine design requirements and constraints.
• Drive to clarify design requirements when they are ambiguous or unknown.
• Accurately estimate timeframe to complete project work, once scope of work is adequately defined and then complete work to agreed-to timeline.
• Strong fundamental understanding of electrical design practices, machine / motion control systems, electro-mechanical systems, robotics, programming, and system integration.
• Demonstrated ability to design, develop and deliver fully integrated machine and motion control, automation, and process machine systems to manufacturing.
• Familiar with state of the art technologies in the following areas: control systems integration, controls architectures, PLC’s, motion control systems, electro-mechanical drive systems, robotics, part sensing, vision, risk assessment, and safety systems.
• Ability to work in a team based environment and lead or participate on a highly matrixed team.
• Possesses an understanding of general mechanics and ability to apply it in troubleshooting and system design.
• Sound problem solving and decision making processes and skills.
• Highly motivated, results oriented, customer focused, with a high commitment level.
• Must be able to program in ladder logic or equivalent.
• Experience with programming manufacturing systems using higher level programming languages:
o C++ or C#
o VB or VB.Net
• Experience leading the checkout and verification of electrical control panels.
• Demonstrated project management and leadership skills.

Desired Skills:
• Experience preferred with Beckhoff, Lab view, Allen-Bradley, Safety PLCs, iFIX SCADA.
• Manufacturing experience and ability to work in a manufacturing environment.
• Computer vision system experience.
• Fanuc robot programming skills.
• Knowledge of glass and ceramic manufacturing.
• Prior experience moving a new product or process from development into manufacturing
• Experience in advanced control strategies.
• Knowledge of the rules and regulation relating to implementation and best practices in electrical system design and implementation:
o National Electric Code
o NFPA 79 Specification
o NFPA 70e Specification
o ANSI and IEC electrical symbols
o Grounding and shielding of electrical systems
• Able to effectively leverage external machine builders and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration of later stages of system implementation.
