Mechanical Engineer II

Description:
Are you interested in “Life Changing Innovation”? As with Thomas Edison, we have a history of working with the world’s greatest innovators. We solve our customers’ most complex problems that others can’t or won’t. Collaboration, Innovative Spirit and Career Development are just a few of the reasons world class professionals choose Corning Incorporated for a career. We are headquartered in Corning - a vibrant city in Upstate, NY where residents enjoy the benefits of a rich arts and culture scene, one of the world’s fastest-growing wine regions and a family friendly area with affordable homes and quality education.
Corning is the world leader in specialty glass and ceramics, creating and manufacturing keystone components that enable high-technology systems.
Corning’s history is filled with breakthrough technologies that have played an important role in the way the world works. We thrive on solving difficult, commercially relevant problems through an innovative and collaborative research and development process. Corning succeeds through sustained investment in R&D, more than 160 years of materials science and process engineering knowledge, and a distinctive collaborative culture.
For almost three decades, Corning Environmental Technologies has developed creative, highly effective emission control solutions for mobile and stationary sources around the world. We joined the campaign for cleaner air in the early 1970s, when we developed high-performance, cost-effective cellular ceramic substrates for use in catalytic converters. Our invention has become the industry standard for more than 95% of today’s catalytic catalytic-converter equipped vehicles. Today, we hold more than 200 patents on emission-control products and processes used in gasoline, diesel and alternative-fuel vehicles, as well as stationary applications.

Scope of Position:
• Primary function is to execute finite element models with a structural mechanics focus. This person will specialize in product reliability ceramic honeycomb products. In this role, this person will support new products in assessing material options, product designs and manufacturing processes to identify technical challenges & unique failure modes for the purpose of ensuring new products meet performance requirements related to reliability. In addition, this role would also be involved in the design of dies for new products to include die stress analysis and fluid dynamics to model batch flow through the die.
• Additionally, about 50% of this person’s time will be spent conducting laboratory tests related to product and material characterization. This includes the use of machine vision systems and their measurement outputs as well as using mechanical load frame testing of brittle materials at high temperatures with non-contact sensors. The other 50% of this jobs time will be used for data analysis (interpreting experimental results, data processing, and running simulations).
• Emphasis is on, but not limited to, mechanical reliability performance. Focus is on understanding of fundamental science as it relates to the projects goals.
• The successful candidate will be comfortable in working with technical product development groups, research scientists and engineering. Providing presentations to management may be required.
• The role of this individual is to serve as a technical support staff in mechanical properties and/or material science as well as having a strong understanding of reliability principles and will interface with numerous project groups.

Day to Day Responsibilities:
Collaborate with new product projects to:
• Identify potential critical challenges and failure modes – includes team facilitation to identify risks
• Identify the proper testing methods & develop new methods if needed to evaluate the risks
• Develop & manage testing plans
• Conduct experiments to gain fundamental knowledge to address the technical challenges
• Perform data analysis and interpretation
• Make recommendations to projects to improve functional performance and reliability
• Develop new intellectual property
• Run structural mechanics simulations using finite element analysis (ANSYS, ABAQUS)

Travel Requirements: Variable but expectation is <5%, possibly international
