Colorado State University seeks applications and nominations for the Abell Chair in Synthetic Biology. The successful candidate will have a well-funded research program and actively participate in education and scholarship activities. Candidates must have an international reputation in synthetic biology and must be eligible for appointment as a full or associate professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. Reflecting departmental and institutional values, candidates are expected to have the ability to advance the Department's commitment to diversity and inclusion. The Abell Chair was endowed in 1980 by George Abell, a graduate and supporter of the College of Engineering. It has been held by several distinguished faculty members over the years and is now available to an outstanding academic in the field of synthetic biology. The faculty member who fills this position will interact with a vibrant synthetic biology community at Colorado State University and is expected to be a leader in synthetic biology research and educational activities on campus. This community includes more than 25 faculty members on campus in many different academic departments, from mathematics and biology to computer science and veterinary medicine. His or her lab will be located in the new, state-of-the-art Suzanne and Walter Scott, Jr. Bioengineering Building, which houses the Systems and Synthetic Biology (SSB) Research Pod. The SSB research pod is a collaborative research environment that promotes research and innovation among students and postdoctoral scholars. Education in synthetic biology is also actively pursued at Colorado State with newly developed courses and undergraduate students competing in the iGEM competition.
The Chemical and Biological Engineering program at CSU has had a record of very high-quality education and research since its inception in 1977. There are currently 340 undergraduate and 35 graduate students in the program, 12 tenure-track faculty, and two full-time instructors. The Department has integrated both chemical and biological sciences into our undergraduate curriculum and offers one of the first ABET-accredited Chemical and Biological Engineering BS degrees. Since 2004, nine junior faculty members have been hired. Our faculty is engaged in exciting research work, with emphases on synthetic biology, bioenergy, biochemical and biomedical engineering, experimental and computational systems biology, bioanalytical devices and microfluidics, polymer science, and biomaterials.
