THE BREAKTHROUGH TOBY ROBINS BREAST CANCER RESEARCH CENTRE
AT THE INSTITUTE OF CANCER RESEARCH, CHELSEA, LONDON

Higher Scientific Officer / Senior Scientific Officer

The Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre is the first centre in the UK devoted to breast cancer research. Our goal is to advance research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. We currently have a vacancy for a position in our Tumour Biology Team, led by Dr. Andrew Reynolds.

The group of Dr. Reynolds is focused on understanding how tumours respond to angiogenesis inhibitors and how resistance to this form of therapy develops. To address this, the group uses a variety of approaches including in vitro assays, in vivo assays and analysis of clinical material (see Reynolds et al., Nat Med 2009, PMID: 19305413, Welti et al., Oncogene 2010, PMID: 21057538). The ultimate goal is to understand how to effectively target tumour angiogenesis in human cancer.

We wish to appoint a Higher Scientific Officer or Senior Scientific Officer to join the group of Dr. Reynolds. The post holder will be expected to make a significant contribution to the research output of the laboratory by providing technical and administrative support for a number of research projects. The post holder will be required to perform many different techniques with a high degree of proficiency, including tissue culture, western blotting, molecular biology, RNA isolation, qPCR, FACS analysis, immunohistochemistry, light microscopy, in vivo tumour models with drug treatment, laser capture microdissection and in situ hydridisation.

Applicants should possess a BSc or PhD in biological science. The successful applicant is expected to be highly motivated, with extensive experience in cancer research that will be supported by an appropriate publication record. Excellent technical, organisational and interpersonal skills are also required.

The post is offered on a fixed term contract of 36 months initially. The salary range for a Higher Scientific Officer is £28,966 to £36,060 p.a. inclusive and the salary range for a Senior Scientific Officer is £37,241 - £44,336 p.a. inclusive. Starting salary will be based upon relevant experience and skills.
