UNIVERSITY OF EXETER
Environment and Sustainability Institute
We are taking a unique opportunity to create a world-leading, interdisciplinary centre investigating the consequences of environmental change and the mitigation and management of its effects. Building on the existing academic strengths of the University of Exeter, the £30 million Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) will focus on undertaking significant cutting-edge research in finding solutions to problems of environmental change, and the application of an ecosystem services approach. There will be three major themes: clean technologies, natural environment, and social science and sustainability.
Funded with a £22.9 million investment from the European Regional Development Fund and £6.6 million from the South West of England Regional Development Agency, the ESI offers:
• a research centre to be housed in a major new building on the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campus near Falmouth;
• state-of-the-art resources and equipment;
• a strong interdisciplinary working environment;
• the opportunity to work in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, a natural laboratory for environmental change research;
• a diverse range of potential research partnerships;
• an enthusiastic and supportive group of regional stakeholders to grow existing and new businesses on the outcomes of research;
• an opportunity to support the development of a new low carbon regional economy.
The ESI will be headed by inaugural Director Professor Kevin J. Gaston. We will be appointing up to 23 further posts across the three themes of the ESI. Applicants for these chairs will be recognised leaders in their field of research as evidenced by publications and other outputs, and will have strong inter-disciplinary research interests and activities that provide an excellent fit for collaboration within the ESI and beyond. They will have proven success in obtaining income from Research Councils and/or other external funders, and an ability to provide excellent teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
