The Institute of Cancer Research (a College of the University of London) is a world-class cancer research organisation.  In the 2008 Higher Education Funding Councils' Research Assessment Exercise, The ICR received the highest percentage of research assessed as four stars, world leading, in the areas of biological sciences and cancer studies.  We came top of the Times Higher Education overall table of HEIs  that submitted to more than one UoA - ranking it as the UK's leading academic research centre, with 37% of activity ranked 4* (world leading) and 42% ranked 3* (internationally excellent).  
 
We seek a Scientific Officer/Higher Scientific Officer to join the Section of Structural Biology cell culture facility which provides recombinant protein for functional and structural studies for teams within the Section. Specific duties include (i) large scale bacterial fermentation, (ii) the production of recombinant protein using insect cell/baculovirus expression technology, (iii) generating and maintaining viral/bacterial stocks, (iv) implementation of novel approaches for protein expression in bacteria and eukaryotic cells.  The position is funded by Cancer Research UK.
 
The successful applicant will hold at least a BSc (or equivalent) in a biological science.  Good laboratory technique and experience of large scale microbial fermentation are essential. Experience with tissue culture techniques would be an advantage.
 
There is funding for the post until 31st March 2016 initially. The salary range for a Scientific Officer is £22,549 to £28,055 p.a. inclusive, and the salary range for a Higher Scientific Officer is £28,966 to £36,060 p.a. inclusive. Starting salary will be based upon relevance of post-graduate experience and skills.
