Postdoctoral / PhD position in Computational Biology

The research group 'Computational Genomics and Epidemiology' is looking for a talented and motivated PhD student or postdoctoral researcher to join the team. Our research is focused on computational studies of the influenza virus (phenotype, evolution and epidemiology), metagenomic data (phylogenetic classification / binning by sample populations) and biomedical applications.
Requirements are a degree in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics or related field. For postdoctoral applicants, furthermore a good publication record and working experience with machine learning, statistics and data mining or in computational biology are required. The candidate must have a strong interest in interdisciplinary collaborations and good programming skills. Background knowledge in virology, population genetics, genomics or metagenomics is advantageous.
The Max-Planck-Society (MPG) is the premier basic research branch in Germany. The Max-Planck Institute for Informatics is devoted to Computer Science and Information Technology. The research group 'Computational Genomics and Epidemiology' belongs to the Computational Biology division of the institute. This offers an interdisciplinary research environment with exciting challenges on novel biological data and leading-edge expertise in one of today's most dynamic scientific disciplines.
The group is also a member of a larger Computational Biology Center in Saarbruecken ( ), together with groups from Saarland University, where several curricula in computational biology are being offered. Furthermore, the group collaborates with other Max-Planck Institutes, notably in the areas of biology and medicine, as well as with universities, genome centers, and the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.
Applications should include a curriculum vitae, cover letter, publication list and email addresses of two or three referees. Please refer to 'comp bio research position' in your application. The Max-Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer. Qualifications being equal, precedence will be given to candidates with disabilities.
