Anyone can tell me the difference between High-Throughput Screening (HTS) and High Content Screening (HCS)?
High Content Screening (HCS) is an automated method for compound screening that uses image analysis to quantify changes in cellular phenotype.
High Throughput Screening (HTS) is usually an automated version of an assay that focus on one individual biochemical or biolgical mechanism. Usually HTS assays screen for inhibition or stimulation of one part of the mechanism in question rather than for changes in gross phenotype.
HCS is used mainly in cell biology with special application in drug discovery process. It has automated microscopy which detects targeted protein (which is fluorescently tagged or Ab bound). The content of this protein is evaluated in the cell by different measure to check the potency of drug.
HTS is screening (or conducting experiment) in large amount in very small time. It involves automated robotic system, liquid handeling system etc. Some eg are microarray, kinase profiler, Octet. you can also understand in this way that while working on 384 or 1536 well plates (for even ELSIA) is also HTS as you are screening a large lot of sample in 1 go...
