Calculating membrane time constant

This is more of a math question than a physiology one, but how do you fit an exponential function to the voltage deflection in order to find the membrane time constant? I know how to obtain it by finding the time at 63%, but I see it calculated the other way and was wondering how they did that.

So if I have Vt = Vmax (1-e^(-t/tau)), how do I get tau with a voltage deflection?
