evaluating plant infection

i'm currently writing a research concerning the fusarium wilt problem in banana. my research aims to develop a formulation of biocontrol product to protect the plant from infection.
i was informed that the only way to evaluate the extent of the infection is through plant indexing. is there any other way? i'm a graduate school student and i want my evaluation to be a bit more comprehensive and appropriate for my level of learning... an evaluation using immunifluorescence microscopy perhaps? or chromosome analysis? is it possible? or will plant indexing would still be better compared to those other methods i mentioned?

reply to my email pls.
