Dear Jiten, PhD programs are

Dear Jiten, PhD programs are known as Graduate programs in US and you need good score for assuring your admission in a good University. Regarding scores, my friends told me ne should score around (atleast) 1350 to get a good place in mediocre University.
A better answer can be posted by someone from US universities. May be Ivan or someone can answer this in better and detailed way. U can contact him through PM here or in this forum only.

Average GRE scores vary based

Average GRE scores vary based on the program and the school. These can be found on each University's website depending on the department.
Here is what the University of Washington graduate biology program says:
"Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Our Institutional Code is 4854. Departmental codes are no longer used.
We strongly urge that you take the GRE no later than October. No subject test required. Registration forms or previous score reports may be requested from the Educational Testing Services, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000, telephone 1-800-537-3160; by e-mail at gre-info@ets.org.
There is no minimum GRE score, although our more competitive applicants generally score above the 75th percentile in all areas."
This is probably a good standard for a tier 1 research institute.
