I have a basic question..... why do we add KMnO4 to the water for triple distillation? Does it work as a quencher to remove carbonates and bicarbonates or ac as a deionizer???
Permanganate is powerful oxidizer, it oxidizes pretty much all organic matter into water, CO2 and N2. Some volatile organics co-distill with water, hence they should be destroyed with permanganate...
Thanx for the reply. but Is it not true that even if the oxidation occur, th product will be organic acids or aldehydes or ketones which inturn are volatile again...... So what is the benefit in that case??
I'm sure that permanganate is such a powerful oxidizer that no organic molecules stay intact.
