Opening For Clinical Research Associate - London

 Job Ref: 1446288
Applications are invited for a Clinical Research Associate in the Departments of Molecular Neuroscience and Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy, UCL Institute of Neurology, under the supervision of Professors H. Houlden and M.G. Hanna, working as part of a team of researchers on the Wellcome Trust funded Strategic Award “Synaptopathies: genetics, biophysics and circuit mechanisms of paroxysmal neurological disorders”.

The Synaptopathies award is led by Prof Dimitri Kullmann (synaptic and circuit function), with co-applicants Prof Henry Houlden (genetics of neurological disease), Prof James Rothman (Yale/UCL – Nobel Prize 2013, mechanisms of vesicle fusion), Prof Sanjay Sisodiya (genetics of epilepsy), Dr Stephanie Schorge (ion channel function), Prof Peter Goadsby (King’s College – migraine and other primary headaches), Dr Kirill Volynski (calcium-exocytosis coupling), Dr James Jepson (synaptic function in Drosophila) and Prof Michael Hanna (neurological channelopathies).

The post holder will have a key role in running the collection and characterisation of families with paroxysmal neurological disorders such as episodic ataxia, epilepsy and severe migraine phenotypes. Laboratory work on this project will consist of genetic analysis using the latest exome and genome sequencing and the detailed functional characterisation of the genes underlying these synaptopathies.

Applicants must be medically qualified, hold MRCP or equivalent, and have previous experience in neurology. Resourcefulness, computing experience, good inter-personal skills and a very high level of consideration and care for patients and research subjects is essential. The ability to perform accurate neurological phenotyping of families with neurological disorders is also a requirement. Knowledge of genetics and neuroscience, an understanding of research methodology, and excellent presentation and teaching skills are desirable.

The post is available from April 2015 and is funded by the Wellcome Trust for three years in the first instance.

Starting scale on the UCL CL7 pay scale £34,220 - £42,612 pa including London Allowance, superannuable.
