As part of Kew’s Department of Comparative Plant and Fungal Biology, you will join a team of specialists in a range of skills. The Analytical Methods section provides laboratory services for all other Kew Science Departments. It develops and implements technologies, including molecular biology, microscopy, seed biology and biochemistry.
Your role will focus on a range of imaging methods and associated techniques, including preparation of material for light microscopy and electron microscopy. You will be involved in the development and implementation of a variety of techniques.
You will report to the Imaging/EM Laboratory Manager and Head of Department. Your tasks will include operation and maintenance of specialist equipment, assisting in research projects, training staff, students and visitors in specialist techniques and applying appropriate health and safety procedures.
You will have at least a BSc degree-level or equivalent in an appropriate subject and knowledge of current research in plant and/or fungal molecular systematics. You will have skills in relevant laboratory techniques and computer programmes, ideally including methods associated with light microscopy, SEM and TEM, and/or confocal and 3D imaging, though some training can be provided. You will possess training skills and experience of writing and presenting scientific data. You will be a team player who can manage conflicting priorities and work on your own initiative.
