Job Ref: 8248
Based in Kew Gardens
Kew is the world-leader in plant diversity science, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a major visitor attraction, that shows the importance of plants in all our lives. Kew’s mission is to inspire and deliver science-based plant conservation worldwide, enhancing the quality of life.
As a result of the restructuring of Kew’s Science Department, an opportunity has arisen in the new Collections Department. You will be a member of the Laboratory-based Collections team, reporting to the Lab-based Collections Manager; and will be responsible for helping to maintain the highest standards in the management of Kew’s internationally important collections. Specifically, the role will assist in the management of Kew’s DNA Bank and the Microscope Slide Collections, possibly helping with other collections, as required.
You will be responsible for curating the laboratory-based collections to high standards, including contributing to identifying priority areas for curation and collection development. This includes data management and some small-scale project management (with the possibility of collaborative projects with colleagues in other Kew Science Departments), and assisting with the preparation of reports and journal articles, as required.
You will also carry out some teaching or training activities, together with public engagement activities in the Gardens, to promote Kew’s science.
With at least five GCSEs, or equivalent, including Maths and Science, and preferably a first degree in collection management, you will have knowledge of DNA banking and/or the preparation, documentation and organisation of microscope slides, especially those related to plant micro-morphology (e.g. wood, leaves or pollen). You will also have experience of data curation and, preferably, of biological specimen digitisation. You will be capable of both working collaboratively, as part of a team, and working unsupervised for periods of time.
Benefits include 30 days holiday per year, a choice of pensions, a flexible benefits scheme as well as a great working environment.
