Opening For Microscopy and Imaging Support - Manchester

    3 year position (until 31.03.17)

The Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute (www.cruk.manchester.ac.uk), an Institute of The University of Manchester (www.manchester.ac.uk), is a world-leading centre for excellence in cancer research. The Institute is core funded by Cancer Research UK (www.cancerresearchuk.org), the largest independent cancer research organisation in the world. We are adjacent to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (www.christie.nhs.uk), one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe. These factors combine to provide an exceptional environment in which to pursue basic, translational and clinical research programmes.

Our aim is to understand the fundamental basis of cancer and apply that knowledge to developing new treatment strategies for cancer patients. Our advanced research programmes span a spectrum of cancer research, from the molecular and cellular basis of cancer through to drug discovery, translational research and clinical trials.

The Institute has outstanding laboratory facilities and exceptional core services, including next generation sequencing, microarrays, confocal microscopy, bioinformatics, histology and mass-spectrometry.

We are situated in Manchester, England, a vibrant and dynamic city that is surrounded by beautiful countryside and has excellent transport links both nationally and internationally.

The Imaging and Cytometry Facility supports research projects of the Institute in translational and fundamental research. The team consists of seven members of staff who enjoy a stimulating working atmosphere working alongside over 200 scientists, and we are presently seeking a graduate to join our successful team.

The activities of the facility include service work, teaching, accompanying and supervising users and helping to develop new methods in cytometry, imaging and analysis. The facility’s laboratories house complete instrumentation for automated high content screening, molecular pathology, confocal microscopy, super resolution imaging and flow cytometry (traditional and imaging).

This support post is to underpin the research at the Institute and the successful candidate will be trained in whole slide histology imaging, spectrophotometric imaging, microscopy (including confocal and super resolution) and image analysis. The day to day duties of the post includes running samples, training users, providing first line support, and ensuring the laboratory runs in a smooth manner. The successful applicant will also support the institute facilities booking system and be responsible for completing risk assessments for the laboratory and equipment.

The successful applicant should have a BSc in a related subject (or equivalent relevant experience) together with relevant experience in microscopy and in maintaining equipment to predefined standards. A background in one or more of the following: widefield and restorative microscopy; confocal microscopy; two photon microscopy; histology; fluorescence labelling; analytical equipment and standardisation of equipment would be desirable but not essential.
