The U. S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), the Department of Defense’s premiere research institute for medical defense against biological threats located at Fort Detrick, Maryland, is seeking to fill the position of Science Director. The USAMRIID is a subordinate unit of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, a subordinate command of the U.S. Army Medical Command. The incumbent will be involved in the development of the scientific strategy and management of the research portfolio. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for execution of the institute’s discovery and early development activities. The Science Director will be responsible for ensuring USAMRIID’ s continued leadership role in the field of biodefense through the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies, recruitment of a premier workforce, and improvements in the management and operation of the institute’s technical work unit.
Desired Qualifications: A degree in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, PhD. or related degree in the biological sciences and 10-15 years of relevant experience in leading a world-class research organization. A successful candidate should be a recognized expert or global leader in one core area of biological research, yet have a broad understanding of the biological sciences. They should have strong process orientation with the ability to understand the strategic and tactical link between basic research and early development. The candidate should have strong business and scientific perspective, demonstrated ability to deliver results in a structured organization, and a solid background in the management of a technical organization, preferably in either a pharmaceutical or biotechnology organization. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, strong project management skills, and the ability to work cooperatively in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment are required.
