The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Laboratory of Clinical Infectious Diseases (LCID) is offering a position as a staff clinician in mycology clinical and translational research.
LCID conducts clinical and basic studies of human infectious and immunologic diseases, with a focus on the comprehensive understanding and management of patients and their diseases. LCID focuses on the pathogenesis, pathophysiology, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases.
An enthusiastic and highly motivated clinician scientist will work to identify and characterize regions of high genetic plasticity in the human and pathogen genome that have strong associations with clinical outcome. Focus will be on infections of the AIDS-related pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans, as well as Candida albicans, the fourth most common blood stream infection in the United States. Novel pathways related to virulence identified by a number of genomics methods will be further characterized using yeast and mammalian genetics and immunology.
The successful applicant must have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. and will be responsible for clinical care and protocol design related to patient-centered research analyzing experimental results, preparing manuscripts, and helping with the supervision of students and residents. No previous experience in pathogenic fungi is required, although board eligibility in infectious disease is preferred. Our laboratory provides strong support for the development of independent projects leading to a productive career for post-fellowship candidates.
